Description: | Held in the heart of Galveston's Historic Downtown Cultural Arts District, The Grand Kids Festival stretches for three blocks along Postoffice Street on Galveston Island, Texas. Celebrating its 21st Anniversary this year, the Festival offers three outdoor stages, an indoor stage (at The Grand), a storytelling tent, over a dozen activity areas, over forty activity booths and an array of food and beverage booths. Designed to develop an arena for participation, the Festival offers something for children of all ages and cultures. During this one-day event, approximately 5,000 Festival attendees enjoy or participate in interactive arts and crafts in a variety of media â taking home a wonderful array of their creations at the end of the day. Additionally, visitors enjoy live entertainment by professional artists specializing in family-friendly productions, county-wide local children's performing groups, interaction with live animals at the petting zoo and pony ride areas and much more. One of the Festival highlights is Missoula Children's Theatre's week-long residency, this year culminating in two performances of The Wizard of Oz. The residency includes an average of fifty area children who participate in a week of rehearsals in preparation for their two performances onstage as part of The Grand Kids Festival. HISTORY The Grand Kids Festival was initiated in April, 1996 as an enhancement to the "Serious Fun" children's series of live performances at The Grand 1894 Opera House. Its goal was to create more opportunities for family involvement throughout the community and to excite our area youth's senses and creativity through hands-on arts activities. The Festival provides participatory hands-on access to the fine arts for children and their families; raises an appreciation and awareness of the fine arts; demonstrates the talent and ability of our community's children; and creates a visible, broad-based event adhering to The Grand's mission. | ||
