Description: | From Hispanic Heritage Festival & Cook-Off Website: In 1994 friends and family gathered in September to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a backyard BBQ. For the next several years the backyard bbq and celebration grew larger with more friends and invites. And, unofficially the Hispanic Heritage Committee started in 1996 when the South Texas Museum asked Rojelio Cuellar, Jr and John Farias to coordinate a project for National Hispanic Heritage Awareness. The first project started out as an event on two downtown streets near the museum. The second year added the Frijole Cook-off contest. Nena Pitts and the late Edwin Golddapp helped in coordinating the event. Cuellar and Farias, seeing the need for such an event and its possibilities, formed the Hispanic Heritage Committee Inc. in December 13, 1999. On August 14, 2004 the Hispanic Heritage Committee amended the Charter Number 01562131-01 to the Alice Hispanic Heritage Committee, Inc.
The Hispanic Heritage Festival is now held down town Alice during the month of September. The two day event includes live music, exhibits, food vendors, arts and crafts and a BBQ cook-off. This year the event will be held Friday & Saturday September 6 & 7, 2019. For information email hispanichc@********.*** or call the Alice Chamber of Commerce at (***) ***-**** or (***) ***-****.
